Research Paper Unit

04/11/2011 15:53

If you were absent from school today, make sure to look in the Monday box for a two page description of the Research Paper, and a two page print out of the slides used during the PowerPoint Presentation today.

Noteworthy things talked about:

A hanging indent is when you do not indent the first line of the resource used on your Works Cited page, but you indent all lines that belong to that resource.

MLA format tells us that we cannot do borders, colors, or even fonts that are not Times New Roman 12 point! We are writing our essay in MLA format.

There are a lot of things that we need to learn about MLA format still, but parenthetical documentation is tomorrow, so don't miss it!

End of the Unit and the beginning of?

04/11/2011 00:18

As you all know, the end of the unit for Three Cups of Tea was this past Friday. That means that all projects were to be turned in before this date if you wanted a late grade on them. Projects not emailed or turned in to me are an automatic fifty percent.

What are we doing next? Good question!

Mr. Johnson, Ms. Shinkonis, Ms. Seiter, and I are teaming up to make some real world connections for you for EARTH DAY.

What does this mean for English?

It means a research paper about a Social Studies topic. Don't worry because I will be with you every step of the way, and I promise that some of the steps will be easier than others. Bear with me, because this is the SHORTEST unit for us this year. The next and last unit after this one is the Maniac Magee Unit.

One more week until Spring Break. I know you are all excited :)

March 22, 23, and 24

03/23/2011 23:33

 ELPA testing and article analyzing.

Those of you who are taking the ELPA, good luck! I know you can do it!

Those of you who are not will be analyzing articles about things we have learned in this unit.

No homework for anyone during ELPA testing; this is my gift to you!

March 21, 2011 Class

03/21/2011 21:07

Students read chapter 20 of Three Cups of Tea.

Students actively read an article about how peace and education are linked. See the white Monday box for extra copies.

Students learned how to actively read by:

1. Underlining important phrases and words

2. Circling what they are confused about or want more information on

3. Writing fast-notes in the margins so that they do not have to re read the paragraph for information again.

Assignment due tomorrow:

Finish actively reading the article and looking up the definitions and correlations of the circled words (at least two circled words per paragraph)
